If any group is worthy of thanks for the results of the elections in Libya then it would be the Libyans alone. They succeeded in presenting themselves to the free world as a civilised nation eager to catch up with the developed world and distancing themselves from confinement within the cocoons of the religious movements. These movements do not propose new political, developmental or intellectual approaches to promote society. The majority of people do not need someone playing the religious card and using it as a vehicle to achieve political goals. People can only see, in the current religious governments, underdevelopment, oppression and exclusion of others. If liberal politicians achieve their goals towards progress, prosperity and respect for human rights and activation of civil society and transfer of the community from tribal to civilised, if they do so then the salafists are doomed and would retreat back to the caves from where they came taking advantage of the freedom granted to them by the martyrs and wounded of the revolution. I have to mention that the most important fact that ruined the image of the salafists is the demolition of the shrines of erudites and Companions of the Prophet. This reminded us of Taliban, their poor respect for monuments and their dragging of the nation into a clash of civilisations. It’s also worthy of noting that the salafists will never accept public opinion and will do their utmost to hinder the march toward democracy. The hope is in God and the will of the people in the face of the plague coming from across the border. Thank you Zawaya and its readers

Peace and the mercy of God be upon you. My reply in this case is the following: first, do not look at the result; look instead at the cause and at the main financial and moral supporter in the Arab world. It is not an unexpected question, but it is a deliberate and enduring one. Look what happened to the Taliban after they smashed historical idols that were never worshiped? The act in spite of its superficial background has also other backgrounds including to sow sedition and instability between supporters and opponents of this process, and that is what the primary enemy of humanity wants. Moreover, such decisions should have been postponed until the country is stable in order not to deepen wounds and spread trouble over issues that do not really matter. The mastermind of this act is a real criminal against his homeland in the first place, as well as against the dead and also against the nation because this deepens the rift. And I reached a conclusion that I did not want to spread, but since the matter is serious I must inform you that these buildings are occupied by jinnis who spread polytheism along humans. You say how? Well here is how. When a sterile woman comes and make an offering to the shrine, she is showing loyalty to the caretakers of that shrine and those caretakers are already competing with jinni who already touched the woman’s vagina and made her their servant. So they free her from that jinni who assaulted her and who of course flees for his life because now he finds himself alone. They replace him with a different jinni in a different organ. Now, as soon as she has knowledge of her husband, that woman becomes pregnant because the reason for her infertility disappeared. However, the word that is spread is that the barren woman, as soon as she visited the shrine, was cured of infertility. That is polytheism, and then it spreads. That is also the desire and the wish of those who see us whilst we can’t, and thus loyalty to them continues by virtue of people considering the result that has emerged — that is, the disappearance of infertility following the visit to the shrine. And then starts the guidance toward this shrine or that without an assessment of the consequences. This is just a small example of what is happening and reality is full of many more. So the issue is not that easy. We should go back to its real depth, both human and in terms of evil, and God guides to the right path.

From what is said about the extremists and the heinous acts they commit, the ones we hear about and see in the media, we can say that what they are committing is an affront to Islam. The kind of religious extremism that we see from them is a form of violence, like the demolition of graves in eastern Libya, those are the graves of the World War Western soldiers. This act is shameful, for example, would you like to see the graves of Muslims in the West demolished? The logical answer is no. We know our religion and who doesn’t? I personally consider this an unethical intolerance. It’s therefore the duty of the State to negotiate with these groups and open with them various ways of debate and if they are not convinced then the State should take the right measures. We hear regularly about incidents involving extremists. For example Tunisia, a secular state for nearly fifty years since the reign of Bourguiba, has bars and brothels licensed by the State. You cannot close everything from the beginning. You cannot remove in minutes what was there for 50 years. This can not happen but with reason and dialogue and advice and religious seminars in the media, then they will accept what you are hoping to achieve. But you cannot win people’s hearts with force and iron fists. For example, this year in Tunisia, restaurants and cafes were closed during the month of Ramadan but not the ones serving tourists. This is the correct and peaceful method.

God is our force and our sustenance,,, violence breeds violence and hatred and our religion is a religion of moderation and leniency and tolerance and if not for these values it would not have spread around the world,,, The Prophet, peace be upon him prayed in the Kaaba surrounded by three hundred idols and did not order their destruction until he persuaded people to do so,,, Glory be to who called him the donated mercy… dialogue and then dialogue instead of violence,,, this behaviour reminds me of the wrongful acts of Taliban in Bamyan against statues considered a World Heritage … True there are Sufi matters that must be corrected, but by persuasion and dialogue, and only God is perfect. Each movement or Islamic organization has its ups and downs and we all complement each other. So let’s forgive each other when we disagree unless there is an express provision and Allah knows best

From Omar Bou Kti. – Interested in the religious discourse in Morocco. – A former teacher of Arabic in Mali and a former activist in the religious field in Sikasso, Mali. The only solace for religious extremists is that they are new to religious affairs. Islam is the religion of civilisation – and the term culture includes all aspects of human life from social systems, economic, political, intellectual and artistic – and the Islamic civilisation is considered one of the greatest civilisations known to mankind, wherein diverse civilisations met. The Islamic civilisation selected the suitable parts of these civilisations, fused them, completed their deficiencies, and unified heritage to profane. It was marked by continuity, scalability and flexibility. This is what religious extremists cannot understand, because they think that the form of an Islamic state should be similar to the one in Medina in the life of the Prophet peace be upon him before the development that the Islamic civilisation witnessed at the hands of the Caliphs and the followers that came after them. This is until it reached its peak in the East and West, where its effects spread to sub-Saharan countries such as the civilisation based in northern Mali, in Timbuktu, built by Moroccan kings such as Al Mansour al-Dhahbi.

The attack on Muslim graveyards is a behaviour not accepted by any sane person who witnesses that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, in addition, what are reasons behind that? Did Sharia prohibit this behaviour or not? By God I swear that this behaviour is forbidden in Islam. Hence the question is what is the purpose of this behaviour? Sow sedition in Islamic societies in the name of religion. Then return Muslims to the time of the Prophet and his companions as the best era so the enemy can be pleased to see Arab Muslims go 1400 years back and this is one of the objectives of the Zionist. No more, no less and I hope I approached the desired goal. Thank you

If the salafists are against those Sufi then they are not forced to follow them, You have your religion and I have mine. Ali al-Hamidi, Gabes. I am a moderate Muslim, and I believe that these mausoleums that are visited periodically and anytime for reasons that vary from one person to another, have absolutely nothing to do with Islam. That might appear like a worthless habit, but it’s in reality an association with Allah, given the following reasons: 1) the spread of this phenomenon started after the deterioration of the Islamic civilization, and the spread of illiteracy and ignorance to the extent that the vast majority of people do not know the most basic teachings of their religion. What makes things even worse is the outbreak of Sufi groups that promoted this nonsense. 2) Due to their ignorance, people started believing in the ability of “the “Master so and so” to heal them and give them things, and praying the dead instead of their Creator, which is pure association with Allah. What is the difference between the infidels who worshiped idols in Mecca and these people? I personally do not see any difference between the two. 3) Who are the people that the shrines were built for? I say this just like Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah did in his commentary on Sura al-Ikhlas. In brief, he is a conservative, straight Muslim who follows the orders of Allah and avoids what He forbids; in many places, there are no shrines, and if they existed, they are fake. Besides, if a person wants to ask for something, they should ask their Creator, as there shouldn’t be any mediators between a slave and his Creator. Moreover, when a man dies, all his deeds come to an end except for three — an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge or a righteous child who will pray for him. Therefore, a dead person can no longer cause any benefit or harm, although we continue respecting them for their achievements if they were scholars or did good deeds. Take the example of the pious scholar Abdelqader al-Jilani, who moved to Baghdad. Did this Sheikh die in several villages in Tunisia? I don’t know how many bodies he had to have shrines in many places. People slaughter animals and present them as sacrifices to him, and they take some dust from his shrine to seek his blessings; and they actually believe that this will benefit them. Allah forbid, isn’t this association with Allah? Wake up, people. 4) Finally, I would like to say that Tunisians do not read enough. Everyone is focusing on their specialization, without paying any attention to their religion. They pray, and that’s it…if they pray at all. But if they are amongst those who are fascinated by the West without thinking about their roots and the tolerance of their religion, then we pray Allah for their guidance and for ours.

The modern reform movement in the Islamic world established many principles for intellectual and ideological reform in the Muslim community, both in the Arab region and in the south east and the west of Asia. This reform was triggered by people’s current practices regarding religion and religiosity. These practices have nothing to do with Islamic rules stemming from the Quran and Sunnah. In the Arabian Peninsula, religiosity deviated so much that it can no longer be considered part of Islam. The region has returned to Jahiliyya in a frightening and shocking way. The reformist Sheikh Ibn Abdul Wahhab called for understanding faith and rejecting fads, myths and legends caused by the prevailing ignorance and illiteracy of people. Reform has been unable to face inert, entrenched ideologies that have been spreading myths in their own ways. Al-Saud were powerful and influential, and had control over leadership and the monarchy for reasons that are related to the origin of the group, its ethnic components and its poor moral status in the Arab world. When the reformist Ibn Abdul Wahab made an alliance with al-Saud, they became stronger and started spreading their ideology to support the pillars of their power. They promoted their ideology through Hajj by offering free publications to illiterate, ignorant and uneducated people, and showing their followers as having particular behaviors and practices that oppose the opinions and doctrines of their scholars and predecessors. They established their own references and firmly adhered to them, even if that required resorting to verbal and physical violence and accusing their opponents of Kufr. This prompted all forms of resistance. We need to get rid of some fads and behaviors, but not like these groups did. In Saudi Arabia, similar practices still persist, like visiting graves, using rosaries, and raising hands in supplication, etc. But some of their followers deny them in their home countries, and this calls for reviewing the entire idea.

The destruction of tombs and shrines is a reaction by these groups. Some shameful acts that are contrary to the principles of the Qur’an and Sunnah motivate these crimes against graves. Both parties, i.e. subversive groups and the defenders of shrines, are suffering from an inferiority complex; and each party believes that life is over and this is the end of the world. Belief in a certain religion or doctrine is not confined to a tomb, stones or a building; it’s rather in the depths of one’s heart. Once vandals understand that, they will realise that what they did is meaningless. The same applies to the defenders of shrines, if they are convinced that beliefs are in one’s heart, the vandals will be defeated. I tried to be neutral, although I defend both stones and humans.

What those mobs did in Mali and Libya to Sufi shrines is an honest expression to discredit them, because the owners of these shrines claim the opposite of what they hide. They publicly pretend to be religious in front of the authorities and the public, with the blessings of a biased community; and they brain-wash people to manipulate and exploit them morally and financially in life, and after death. When they have kids, they become spies for the authorities, and turn into tools to get any opponents of the government and Kings. A famous Sufi told a Bedouin who didn’t like him speaking Tamazight to the public: Sir, from throne to bed… What kind of religion is that? So many lies with the blessings of sponsors who pay in Dinars and Dirhams, and who have a fake pedagogy to spread their control and serve colonial interests.

I am addressing Muslims only, because non-Muslims won’t understand my comment. What’s the difference between these shrines – which people worship instead of Allah; people make vows for these shrines, pray to them, swear by them, fear the buried in them, and become friends or enemies with others based on their love for them -, and the idols of Quraish that Arabs worshiped for centuries, and considered as the Spirit that blessed their tradesmen and lives? When the Messenger of Allah conquered Mecca, he demolished the idols and broke them into pieces, so that nobody else would be worshiped with Allah. And today, about fourteen centuries after Muhammad called to the demolition of idols, here comes someone who considers himself a Muslim to claim that the demolition of idols is a cultural offense. This little ignorant has two options: 1) Either renounce Islam, and then we will not care about what he says, even if he says that Muhammad – peace be upon him – committed a crime against the spiritual culture of Arabs in his era, because no sin is counted after disbelief; 2) or recognise Islam and follow Muhammad – peace be upon him -, and then we will tell him to stay committed to his religion. The wise make no difference between the idols that the first disbelievers worshiped, and the shrines that the new polytheists worship. Both parties believe that Allah is the Creator and the Sustainer, but they dedicate some acts of worship – like invocations, trust, fear, hope, veneration, swearing, prayers, sacrifice, and vows – to graves and idols. Allah says: “Say, “Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds… And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims.”… The first to adhere to this belief, and people following him become Muslims. Whoever dedicates one act of worship to someone other than Allah, is committing an act of Kufr and Shirk. Once we understand that, and admit that the mentioned graves have become idols that are worshiped instead of Allah, then we will realise that it’s the duty of Muslims to demolish shrines, and transfer the bones of the people buried there to Muslim graves, just like the Messenger Muhammad did when he destroyed the idols that Arabs considered sacred, partners to God, and part of the religion of their ancestors. The Prophet – peace be upon him – did not care about this heritage or culture, because it was an obscurantist heritage and an infidel culture, leading to immortality in hell. The Prophet – peace and prayers be upon him – demolished them, and established the foundations of a divine culture and a luminous heritage, where Allah alone is worshiped with no partners

comments

Anonymous About 7 months ago

People whose graves were destroyed or threatened to be destroyed are known for their piety and asceticism, and for being unrelated to polytheism and atheism; they are rather first-class preachers. There is even someone that the scholars of his era considered a second conqueror after his grandfather Oqba Ibn Nafi Al Fihri, and who is buried in Biskra in Algeria, i.e. Sheikh Sayed al-Mokhtar al-Kinti.

There are things that are far more important than the demolition of shrines. We should rather build platforms, halls, cultural centers, and universities, where opinions and ideas should be discussed objectively. Do you ever wonder who gives you the right to kill people even if they are guilty? You don’t even have the right to get retribution from your murderer; retribution is obtained through the State, after following a number of legal steps. The demolition of Sufi shrines (Muslim, Christian or Jewish mystics) is a crime against humanity, because this concerns people who tried to get closer to the Creator of the universe. Sufism is a doctrine based primarily on the concepts of Being and Nothingness. Nothingness, as in “nothing” or “emptiness” itself, does not mean that Nothingness cannot create the Being in its “material” or “concrete” sense that only an existing “Being” can create. Hence the Sufi hypothesis that only the “Being”, i.e. God who exists in whatever form (except nothingness) can create the “Being”, i.e. the universe with everything alive in it (people, animals and plants, beside inert things like stones, rocks etc..). In brief, nothingness is nothingness (not life). So this is worth pondering over for those who like to involve reason and logic. The theosophy of Sufi followers is based on this premise. Let’s protect these mystic and Sufi people and their places of worship, which we visit because they declare the oneness of God. Otherwise we will live in an absurd world.

There are many example, like the great mystic figure El Hallaj (a Sufi Muslim who was martyred for saying “Anna Allah”, I am God; for those who understood El Hallaj, he meant “I” which is united with God). Let’s also mention the example of St. Francis of Assisi who, out of love for the Christ, had marks corresponding to the crucifixion wounds on his hands and bleeding feet, thus raising to a high level of holiness. In terms of metaphysics, Maimonides’ Judaism raises to the spiritual convergence of monotheism and the Oneness of one God, Master of the Universe. It’s through heart and reason that Sufism and mysticism are demonstrated. When reason stumbles, the heart comes to the rescue, and vice versa. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my opinion. Pr A.LALAOUI.
