Understanding depiction by the Maghreb peoples depends on the scholars' opinion

It has almost become a ritual to have controversial television programs every Ramadan, with the production and broadcast of series addressed to Muslims from different sects and walks of life, depicting holy religious figures such as messengers, prophets and companions. This depiction is permissible by some Muslim sects, and rejected or prohibited by others; and this raises several issues regarding how the globalization of television affects the understanding of religious traditions by Muslims peoples.

We will talk here about Maghreb peoples in particular, and how they deal as Sunni Muslims – with a majority of Malikites – with the broadcast of TV Series whose references are considered Shiite by some people, and which affect the sanctity of the prophets and companions in this era of globalization. So how is the globalization of television affecting the understanding of the Islamic legacy by the Maghreb peoples?

I think that we can wonder in this context whether we, Maghreb peoples, can ban these series in our countries. The latest of these series was Qaaqaa bin Omar Tamimi, which depicted major companions, such as the Righteous Caliphs. This is evil and not permitted, and it’s even forbidden according to the majority of Sunni scholars.

Before attempting to tackle these questions, I hope that the Maghreb peoples will form a solid and lofty block that will not fall apart easily and argue about such issues, because both Shiites and Sunnis are sects of Arabic origins, and Islamic orientations.

With regard to the main question, I personally think that the Maghreb peoples can’t but adapt themselves to the system of the unique house, which is a realistic option with no other alternative, in light of the downturn – if not the absence – of a written culture, and the emergence of images as one of the most important mechanisms of globalization in the field of modern media. Images have the ability of creating values, tastes and fashions, and even building a new society based on a new hierarchical structure whose most important, and also dangerous, component in the context of globalization, is satellite TV broadcasting. Our world has become a small screen that can be easily browsed and manipulated according to the individual’s desire and curiosity, without any time or place constraints. This makes everyone – including Maghreb peoples – drift towards one direction. However, even with its positive aspects, the globalization of television has also resulted in many negative things, like the depiction of holy religious figures in the cinema and on television, and the possible developments in understanding the rationale and arguments of the supporters of depiction by our Maghreb peoples. Those supporters associate the opposition that emerged upon the record of oral Islamic culture, with the opposition that the depiction series face currently. Also, one of the shortcomings of the globalization of television is our inability to prevent our peoples from watching series or programs that are not in line with our religious or cultural identity.

The mentality of Maghreb peoples might probably change with time, and acceptance of dissenting opinions might be common among them in the context of the globalization of television, and what the world experiences currently in terms of influencing and being influenced by others. However, all these developments should not alter our religion, or blur our cultural and religious identity, since differentiation is one of Allah’s norms.

In conclusion, the depiction of the messengers, prophets and companions in TV series and movies is a new trend that crosses all borders in the Arabic and Islamic worlds; and the final word about it should be pronounced by the scholars of the Islamic nation. The scholars’ opinion will be the basis on which we can determine the nature of the understanding of Islamic traditions by Maghreb peoples in the context of the globalization of television.

That’s a good comment. This phenomenon has become common, and I personally believe that the Prophets cannot be depicted by any humans. Allah knows best.

We appreciate the purpose of this article, but I do not think that the sole target is the sons of the Arab Maghreb. There is Egypt for example, it’s from the Middle East, and it has a long experience in such television series.

Peace be upon you. What matters in all this, is that the Prophets and messengers should not be represented by anyone, because they are selected by Allah, and that’s what matters. As for the issue of the unique house, etc, we should follow what suits our tolerant religion, and follow the orders of Allah, and the Sunnah of his Prophet. Regarding television, the Internet, and other means, they are among the temptations that Mohammed, peace and prayer be upon him, mentioned. My advice to all people is to protect their families, kids and wives, etc., from these temptations. Peace is the best advice, and I am sending you, my brothers and sisters everywhere, my best greetings. Peace.

Allah had chosen the Prophets because they are the purest creatures, and the ones who know Allah the Almighty the best. Allah says (Allah knoweth best where (and how) to carry out His mission), and then charged them with reporting from Him. The Prophets were not safe from the harm of their peoples neither in life nor in death. This is a lesson for us who are far away from Allah, to endure adversity and crises… Your brother, Abdelmalek Maqlaty.

Honestly speaking, this is a good topic for discussion. There are still people who care about our Islamic religion… However, Allah is Sufficient for us, and He us the Best Disposer of affairs, we have no strength and no might.

Unfortunately, I did not see in all these comments one single religious opinion that confirms that this is forbidden or Makruh (disliked). I am talking about all Muslims, regardless of their doctrinal beliefs. We are talking here about the whole nation; all things are originally deemed permissible as long as there is no Shariah text that prohibits them. Allah knows best.

This is a very important topic. If the producer of these series does not adhere properly to Islam, like those sects in Iran, we – on the other hand – know very well that the depiction of prophets, messengers and angels is forbidden and unacceptable. So how can these works be translated and aired on Arabic channels?? Allah says: {And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘We were only conversing and playing.’ Say: ‘Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?’ Make no excuse; you have disbelieved [i.e. rejected faith] after your belief.} [9:65-66]. So let them act and play roles other than those of these holy figures?? As their stories were told in several books, starting with Allah’s book, for those who want to know them.

Peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy. All what was said about these series is correct, but your forgot a very sensitive point, which is distortion and exageration, as parts of these series were not mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, nor in the Sunnah of our Prophet, peace and prayers be upon him, and this leads Muslims to misguidance by believing this hocus pocus.

Peace be upon you. That’s a good intervention. No one can resemble the Prophets and the Companions, whether in looks or morals. May Allah guide us all to what He likes and what pleases Him.

In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate. It is outrageous for series aired nowadays on satellite TV channels, especially Maghreb and Arabic ones, to be referred to as religious, with actors depicting the prophets. How dare they depict the prophets, who have a sacred mission of conveying God’s message to mankind. We are Muslims, and the last Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, taught us in his noble Sunnah to love all prophets and respect them, with no discrimination. It is painful to see normal people impersonating those chosen by Allah to carry His message to mankind. I say: May God help those people and put htem on the right track!

Peace be upon you. From my point of view, airing these series has enabled many lazy people to learn even a little about the prophets, peace be upon them, in the context of the congestion we live in today. Peace.

Who can be as pure as the Prophets of Allah to depict them?? So fear Allah, oh servants of Allah; return to Allah, and do not make mischief in the earth after it has been set in order, Allah does loves not those who do mischief. All these frauds and fads are not allowed. Be my witness, O Allah, that I have conveyed your message.

Dear brothers, I hope that you will not follow all what people or TV say, because everything you want to know and understand is in Allah’s book. Each one of us has his own personality, and should not be influenced by what people say. Believe in God and don’t let series affect you. This is just acting and depiction is forbidden. For God’s sake, stop this.

I think that we should look at the bright side, since these religious series help us understand and disseminate the stories of the prophets, as long as they are presented correctly in a way that doesn’t harm our religion. We all know that no one can actually impersonate prophets.
